Tuckpointing is the process of replacing damaged mortar that has broken down over time. The new mortar is the same color mortar as the bricks. If the mortar is gone, the bricks become loose, and they no longer support the structure properly. Without tuckpointing, the structure could begin to lean and eventually fall.
Repointing and tuck pointing are sometimes used interchangeably though they are slightly different. Repointing is merely replacing the mortar between bricks, without matching colors or adding a thin line. This gives the thin, clean appearance of tuck pointing.
If you want it to look new and fresh, tuck pointing is the way to go.
